I am blown away by the howard lindzon bitcoin explosion in 2017. 11 years dreaming of a year like 2017. I have been trying to soak it all in and ponder what could happen in the coming years.

I don’t think we have seen anything yet. The all-time high list is crawling with financials. Etoro is now in over 150 countries. This is not a US phenomenon. Today, our portfolio company Robinhood announced free options trading. CEO Baiju Bhatt announced that 200,000 people have requested it in the first 7 hours. Coinbase is the number 1 app in the app store.

Compounding and network effects are cool. Learning the language of the markets is cool. It is almost impossible that a panic does NOT occur in 2018 and by panic I mean an all out acquisition spree. Luckily for the leading banks their stocks are up and they have the currency to bid on the new fintech leaders. But they should move quickly because Facebook, Apple, Tencent, Alibaba and Google will be looking to make moves as well.

It’s old news by Mary Meeker’s yearly 17,000 page slideshow on the 2018 state of the Internet is out. In just 8 years, we found a way to get everyone who can handle a new smartphone, a smartphone. Apple meanwhile is spending a lot of time on software and apps trying to help you curb your phone time. I have developed a great way to do less phone time. When I am with my kids or Ellen I ask if I can leave my phone behind to try and enjoy more moments. Sure, there are moments when I’m the person now staring into the distance while they check Instagram and Facebook, but I find that my head is clearer and I am much calmer. I have been doing this daily for the last year.

Google’s stock price can’t keep up with the rest of the FAANGsters because the smartphone, while great for them, is not as good as the once perfect desktop only world of search. Most technology stocks continue to run. If you own the Nasdaq 100 Index you are having a good year up 10 percent. It’s all about the cloud and I like Dries take on it best.
